Whitsundays / Island Heaven
On the east coast of Australia lies one of the most beautiful collections of islands in the southern hemisphere: The Whitsundays. This group of 74 islands sit in the Coral Sea around 900 kilometers north of Brisbane. Each offering white sand beaches, azure waters and some with luxury resorts, making it a perfect place to spend a week or two on a superyacht charter.
What makes this area simply perfect for sailing is that it is protected by the Great Barrier Reef meaning there are no waves or deadly undertows. The main island is Hamilton Island; a small airport receives daily flights from some of Australia’s bigger cities including Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane so it is a great place to meet your yacht.
The island has also been developed with luxury tourism in mind. There are two resorts on the island, a marina, a strip of stores and restaurants, a Koala petting café and a dedicated yacht club, plus innumerable beaches, water sports and viewpoints. The resort of qualia, is the most luxurious in the Whitsundays. Spend a night before or after your yacht charter. Of the 74 islands, only seven have been developed into resorts catering for all kinds of holiday. Some offer back to basic accommodation with a focus on the natural surroundings and some offer luxurious condos complete with private pool, butler service and formal dining.
What they do all have in common though is the simply beautiful seas that fringe each island. A mesmerizing mix of blue, turquoise and indigo. So spend some time just admiring the natural beauty. A great time to visit is for the Hamilton Island Race Week. A week–long event of exhilarating sailing and evening soirees.
