Jongert Yachts was founded in 1953 by Jan Jongert in the Netherlands, in Opperdoes when he opened a workshop with prize money he won from being a professional speed skater. He began by building farmers’ boats and small motorboats. By 1960, Jongert outgrew its facilities and moved to a new yard in Medemblik, where production was focused on larger motor yachts.
At this new yard, the company began to establish itself as one of the premier yacht builders in the area and designed two classes of sailing yachts – the Zwalkers and the Trewes alongside engineering firm Van der Meer and the naval architect Willen de Vries Lentsch. Established in 1969, the Jongert Design Team introduced the company’s Traditional Line, and moving forward, yachts were branded under the Jongert name. The T-line became known for its timeless good looks and high degree of comfort. Classic clipper bows, low freeboards, ketch rigs, and stern windows were just some of the features that Jongert sailing yachts were known for. In the early ‘80s, the order books were full and the company expanded; throughout the ‘90s, the yard continued to grow both in reputation and size, and today, Jongert yachts are some of the most well-known, award-winning vessels coming out of the Netherlands.
