Irwin Yachts was founded by Ted Irwin whose lifetime is dedicated to life on the water. At just 15, he started building boats in his own backyard to his own designs. By 1963, Ted had served with the coast guard and decided that he wanted to work on his own, and rented a small hut on St. Petersburg Beach in Florida where he built his first 31ft commercial sailboat, VOODOO. The boat launched his career as she logged an astonishing race record, racing for two years in the Florida Ocean Racing Association. Ted continued to build successful racing boats including BLACK MAGIC, LA PANTERA, R2D2 and RAZZLE DAZZLE. He used his knowledge of designing and creating racing boats to build high-performance cruising vessels as well.
In 1966, he started Irwin Yacht & Marine Corporation with a 75,000 square foot facility and over 200 employees. Over 6,000 yachts have been built, with over 300 Irwin 52, 54, 65, and 68s are sailing the world.
