Featuring Daniela Backhaus, Head of Engineering Department Mechanical Systems at Lurssen Yachts

What drew you to the yachting world?

I wanted to change my life and start something cool and create things that others will love.

How did you get your start in yachting?

I started in the mechanical engineering department for ship operating systems. After that I moved to the propulsion system. And now I’m working as the head of engineering department for mechanical systems. My start led me to the global pictures of the fascinating world of yachting.

Who are some influential people in your life that you look up to?

My Grandmother is a wonderful example of an influential person in my life. She helped me to make the most of my potentials as a young person.

What are some challenges you face and how do you overcome them?

Finding a balance between what is technically doable and customer’s wishes. The challenge is to find a compromise between the two and find practical solutions. And this can only be solved through action.

What are you currently working on and how do you stay inspired?

I’m currently working on new ideas for propulsion systems. My team gives me feedback and inspires me. Everyone works on things they are very good at and so we have the opportunity to create something special every day.
