Oceanco has launched a new diesel-electric motor yacht named LEVIATHAN, previously known as Y722. This 364ft (111m) vessel is redefining how yachts are conceptualized, constructed, and operated. Described as a vessel that places “people at the heart of every decision,” LEVIATHAN was built not solely on the input of her owner, but by a well-rounded team of top industry talent.

The superyacht features interior design by Mark Berryman Design, exterior design by Oceanco, and naval architecture by Lateral Naval Architects and Oceanco. YTMC served as the owner’s technical representatives. Managing Director Dan Morgan described LEVIATHAN as “a sanctuary of comfort where silence meets strength,” noting “her sharp lines represent a superb synergy of form and function.”

Y.CO brokerage also played a role in the project. CEO and Co-Founder Charlie Birkett said LEVIATHAN is more than a top-of-the-line superyacht. “She is a working ecosystem, designed to support everything from world-class hospitality to scientific research. That is what happens when you put people and purpose, at the center.”

With a seasoned owner at the helm of LEVIATHAN yacht design and construction, a unique approach was taken with the project. The yacht owner, said to be deeply committed to team building and the wellbeing of his crew, elected to incorporate the yacht crew’s input throughout the endeavor.

As the people familiar with the inner workings of a vessel on an intimate level, one would assume including crew in these projects would be standard. Alas, seeking crew counsel is nearly unheard of within the yachting industry, although it has potential to be a revolutionary method of designing. Utilizing the operational knowledge of crew who work and live onboard yachts can enhance the vessel’s functionality and improve the crew’s efficiency. By eliminating onboard materials that are traditionally tedious in upkeep, the crew can focus on higher priority operations (i.e. providing enhanced guest service, assisting in onboard scientific research, etc.).

In a press release, Oceanco noted, “Traditional high-maintenance elements like polished handrails with wooden capping, teak decks, and vast painted superstructure sections were intentionally replaced with smart alternatives. Instead, composite capping rails/decks and full height glass superstructure bulkheads were seamlessly integrated, all without compromising quality but enhancing aesthetics.”

Oceanco also highlighted a unique and sentimental feature onboard the yacht: “As a tribute to the spirit of collaboration at the heart of this project, a glass panel engraved with the names of over 2,000 individuals involved in the build now stands in Leviathan’s main staircase – a permanent reminder that this yacht was built by people, for people.”

“LEVIATHAN represents a new philosophy of yachting placing greater purpose at the heart of design, ownership, and operations,” stated Deniz de Koningh, Project Director at Oceanco. “The owner’s vision sets a forward-thinking example of how yachts can be built and used with intent. We are excited to see the influence she may have in shaping the future of the industry.”

LEVIATHAN will soon begin sea trials. Additional details of the yachting program’s core philosophy and its operating potential will be released by Oceanco in the coming months.
