On August 9, Lürssen launched the completed motor yacht COSMOS, a vessel said to be “a masterpiece that breaks away from conventional yachting norms.” At just over 374ft (114m), COSMOS is one of the largest yachts to be launched in 2025 thus far. COSMOS was first seen when initially launched at the shipyard in 2023.

Peter Lürssen, managing partner of the German shipyard notes, “While it is true that as a custom shipyard, no two yachts that leave our halls are ever the same, there are some that leave an indelible mark on our history. COSMOS is undoubtedly one of those yachts.”

Commissioned by an owner who sought a unique vessel to explore the world with, the vessel is built for long-range, remote cruising. COSMOS’ hull is reinforced to Ice Class 1D allowing her to safely operate in light ice conditions. With highly specialized engineering, the yacht owner’s adventure seeking will know no bounds. Additionally, the owner agreed to the installation of a methanol fuel cell, a complex system that will utilize methanol to produce hydrogen that is then converted into electricity. COSMOS is the first Lürssen yacht to feature this technology.

COSMOS is set to be an immediate industry icon with designs conceptualized and executed by Marc Newson. The interior and exterior designer remarked, “Working with an immensely creative client enabled rare opportunities to push the boundaries.”

In their press release, Lürssen notes Newson’s approach to the project “brought a fresh, daring perspective to yacht design, resulting in a sleek, sculptural vessel unlike anything before her.” COSMOS has indeed surpassed the design standards of the yachting industry. The gigayacht embodies “ambitious and unique architectural and interior design,” resulting in a cohesive combination of striking elegance and futuristic design

Newson continues, “Everything from the smallest detail to the silhouette – outside, inside, and everything in between – is our design. We have, therefore, been able to exploit and explore every creative possibility uninhibited. This liberating free rein afforded the project a joyful, organic evolution, one which resulted in a satisfying novelty and coherence, the aesthetic of which remains very much within our lexicon.”

The most remarkable feature of COSMOS’ construction is the innovative and unconventional use of glass. The topmost deck, located above the private owner’s deck, hosts a glass-domed study with an attached outdoor terrace. Described as a complex feat of glass engineering, Lürssen developed a method of bending thick panels of glass to erect a greenhouse-esque structure which provides a crystal clear, 360-degree view of surroundings.

Continuing with the glass motif, a continuous band of glass flows seamlessly around the cabin deck to ensure unobstructed views and enhanced natural light. The cabin deck aft hosts a balcony with a glass balustrade overlooking the main deck lounge spaces and pool. A glass-enclosed observation lounge graces the bow beneath the foredeck helicopter pad.

The completion of this momentous project happens to coincide with Lürssen’s 150th anniversary. Founded in June 1875, the company has been family run for four generations. Their original core principles of engineering excellence, quality product, innovation stand strong to the present day.
