Sanlorenzo recently launched 50Steel – the world’s first yacht to utilize a green methanol reformer fuel cell system for onboard energy with zero emissions. The cutting-edge technology, in partnership with Siemens Energy, will be responsible for powering the yacht’s hotel systems and is a remarkable display of Sanlorenzo’s commitment to technological advancement.
The reformer fuel cell system will transform green methanol into hydrogen and convert it into electrical energy. This energy will be utilized to run 50Steel’s interior power systems without the need to store hydrogen onboard, thus saving significant space onboard. This carbon-neutral energy source can greatly increase a vessel’s longevity on anchor without need for diesel fuel.
Described by Sanlorenzo as “undisputed elegance on the water,” 50Steel will assimilate never-before-seen features and forward-thinking technology. In addition to the green methanol reformer fuel cell system, Sanlorenzo plans to introduce its patented Hidden Engine Room (HER) system. The HER system is said to be “a revolutionary onboard concept [that will allow] for the maximization of [interior] space… [by] modifying the traditional layout of the boat” with the addition of an additional lounge space.
Chairman and CEO of the Sanlorenzo Group Cav. Massimo Perotti said, “With the launch of the 50Steel, Sanlorenzo celebrates a fundamental milestone in its history, in the spirit of innovation and sustainability. The new line of superyachts embodies the pioneering spirit and passion for challenges that have always guided us in the design and construction of our fleet.”
Cav. Perotti continues his praise of 50Steel by stating, “I believe that what sets [Sanlorenzo] apart is the ability to drive industry innovation, embracing cutting-edge solutions not only in design, always elegant and comfortable, but also in the field of technology and sustainability, to achieve the ambitious goals of reducing our environmental footprint.” The 164ft/50m motor yacht has a steel hull with an aluminum superstructure and can carry up to 10 guests and 9 crew. 50Steel has a max speed of 16ktsand a cruising speed of 12.5kts. Its economical speed is 11kts with a range of 4,000 nautical miles. Sanlorenzo plans to deliver 50Steel in July 2024.
