How did you get your start in yachting?
My entry into the world of yachting was shaped by a series of fortuitous occurrences, passion for the sea, along with a desire to work in an industry that combines luxury, adventure and lots of negotiation.
I embarked on this journey by immersing myself in different roles within the yachting industry. This included roles in yacht sales, management, overseeing the refit of grand superyachts in Greece, managing yacht charters, and pursuing yacht design as a personal hobby. Through hands-on involvement in these diverse areas, I gained valuable insights into the intricacies of the industry, laying a robust groundwork for my eventual career as a yacht broker.
As a younger professional in the industry, what trends have you seen, and what do you predict for the coming years?
As a growing professional in the yachting industry, I’ve observed several trends that are shaping the industry’s landscape. One notable trend is the increasing demand for eco-friendly and sustainable yachting practices, reflecting a growing awareness of environmental responsibility among clients. Additionally, technology is playing a significant role, with advancements in navigation systems, communication tools, and onboard amenities enhancing the overall yachting experience.
Looking ahead, I anticipate a continued emphasis on sustainability, with more yachts adopting eco-friendly technologies and practices. The integration of cutting-edge innovations, such as artificial intelligence and smart automation, is also likely to redefine the way yachts are operated and managed. Furthermore, the industry may witness evolving consumer preferences, with a potential rise in experiential and adventure-focused yachting, catering to a new generation of enthusiasts seeking unique and personalized experiences on the open seas.
What kinds of challenges have you faced in yachting, and how have you overcome them?
As a yacht broker, one of the challenges I often encounter is managing the expectations of clients, especially during complex transactions.
To address this, I prioritize clear and transparent communication with my clients. I take the time to understand their needs thoroughly and provide realistic insights into the market and the buying/selling process. By setting clear expectations from the beginning, I aim to create a smoother experience for all parties involved.
What are some of your most memorable and successful moments?
One of my proudest and most memorable accomplishments in the yachting industry was successfully assisting a client in finding their perfect 50m yacht, despite the challenging market conditions during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. This involved extensive research, patience, and negotiations to secure a fair deal for my client.
Seeing the joy and satisfaction on their faces when they finally acquired their yacht made all the hard work worthwhile.
What advice would you give to someone looking to join the yacht world?
For individuals aspiring to enter the yachting industry, I recommend initiating their journey by acquiring practical experience. Whether it involves working as part of a yacht’s crew or interning with yacht brokerage firms (WE ARE HIRING!!), hands-on involvement can offer invaluable insights and contribute to building a network of industry contacts.
Furthermore, it is essential to maintain a commitment to ongoing education in various aspects of yachting, ranging from yacht construction and design to understanding legal and regulatory aspects. A solid foundation of knowledge will enhance your value as a professional, benefiting both clients and colleagues.
What do you aspire to for the future?
My professional aspirations include cultivating robust connections within the industry to facilitate partnerships and collaborations that significantly contribute to the growth and innovation of our company, Capital Yachting. Ultimately, I aim to assume a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of the yachting industry in Greece and beyond, actively participating in its development. Through these endeavors, I seek to offer unparalleled experiences for both clients and enthusiasts, thereby contributing to the industry’s advancement and enhancement.
