A Yacht Charter in the Windward Islands / The Jewel in the Caribbean’s Crown
The Caribbean’s Windward Islands lie in the south-eastern waters and comprise Martinique, St Lucia, St Vincent, the Grenadines and Grenada – including the small island of Dominica too. This group of islands also known as the Lesser Antilles are the jewel in the Caribbean’s crown, and being less populated thus less crowded than its northerly neighbor of the Leeward Islands, makes for an idyllic winter sun superyacht charter.
Dominica’s volcanic interior and lush but dense jungle coverage has played a vital role in keeping this island relatively tourist free and it is the place you visit to experience the Caribbean in its raw form. With limited official anchorages, and no marinas, superyacht’s can drop anchor as and where fits. This is perfect for swimming off deck, playing with the water toys or indulging in a spot of diving or snorkeling.
This island also has a network of creeks and inland rivers in which it is possible to take the tender out to explore; pass dramatic waterfalls, dense virgin jungle and thermal pools. There are a few wild volcanic beaches too but its beauty lies under and above the jungle canopy. So don’t forget your hiking boots and explore.
A yacht charter in Martinique is perfect for food enthusiast as it has a distinctly French feel to it. The island has two main areas to explore depending on what you are after – the north has a volcanic feel to it with black sand beaches and wild jungle under volcanic peaks; and the south is blessed with classic Caribbean white sand beaches with an interior filled with fragrant plantations of banana, coffee, pineapple and cinnamon.
While on Martinique, ask the captain to spend some time in the island’s capital of Fort France. It is well worth the visit to experience the colors of the capital and the fine French architecture. St Lucia is fairly new on the superyacht charter scene and it is only in recent years that the yacht crowd graced its stunning shores.
