In the mid-‘90s, founder and CEO Francis Lapp, a French-born electrical engineer and entrepreneur, discovered his love for the ocean and sailing and got hooked on racing small catamarans. After purchasing one cruising catamaran and several other yachts, he opened a travel agency specializing in luxury yacht charters. The boats everyone asked for – large, luxurious catamarans – weren’t readily available. That’s when Lapp had a light bulb moment and decided to build these in-demand multihulls, instead of buying them. Except, he would take it one step further. He’d customize them.
He leased an abandoned shipyard in Gdansk, Poland, and established Sunreef Yachts. What began as a charter company for catamarans grew into his own company building custom-made state-of-the-art catamarans. It was the first-ever shipyard in Poland to build catamarans. The first Sunreef catamaran for sale was 74 feet. Unfortunately, it took almost two years to sell. Then along came the Power 70 class, which put Sunreef Yachts on the map.
By 2005, there were 150 craftsmen busy building Sunreef catamarans for sale. That number tripled by 2013; and in 2020, after winning the World Yachts Trophies Best Shipyard Award, Sunreef Yachts had almost 1,200 employees. Today, there are more than 140 Sunreef Yachts worldwide, ranging from 40 to 210 feet. And at least two new models join them every year.
Years of Firsts
Always setting trends instead of following in someone’s wake, Francis Lapp was the first to construct large, completely customized luxury catamarans. Over the years, lots of firsts followed, including:
- Oceangoing luxury catamaran with flybridge, Sunreef 74
- Double deck power catamaran with oceanic range, Sunreef Power 70
- Double deck sailing catamaran, Sunreef 102 (finalist, Showboats Design Award)
- Largest sloop-rigged catamaran, Sunreef 114 (finalist, World Superyacht Award)
- 60-foot power catamaran with IPS Volvo propulsion, Sunreef Power 60
- Carbon catamaran-superyacht, Sunreef 80 Carbon Line
- Catamaran-superyacht with a folding mast
- 70-foot power catamaran with IPS Volvo propulsion
Sunreef Yachts leads the world in designing and manufacturing custom luxury sailing and power multihulls, which is why yacht lovers from around the world commission Sunreef Yachts to design and build their dreamboat.
They know they’ll leave with a unique, high-performance, plush catamaran jam-packed with innovative design features and the latest technology.
Going Green
Sunreef Yachts also offers a range of eco-friendly yachts. The different models use cutting-edge electric engines, hybrid engines and high-performance kites that combine the advantages of eco motoring with wind propulsion.
Moving toward a more carbon neutral future isn’t the only benefit of an eco-friendly Sunreef catamaran, there’s the added bonus of fuel savings, low-maintenance and super-quiet operation.
