GAD-A-BOUT 1928 29' 6" HACKER CRAFT CO Boat

N/A United States $175,000 USD

The 1928 29' 6" HACKER CRAFT CO Dolphin Deluxe Runabout Boat GAD-A-BOUT is a boat for sale located in N/A, Michigan, United States.

There are runabouts and there are Hackers. No other wooden boat builders have enjoyed over a century of acclaim and accomplishment, as have the American craftsmen at Hacker Boat Company. For generations, Hacker Craft mahogany runabouts have ruled the waterways from Lake Tahoe to Long Island Sound.

GAD-A-BOUT is an immaculate, triple-cockpit representation of the gilded era of wooden boats, when massive gas engines were squeezed into luxurious speedboats to thrill the elite - royalty, titans of industry, and Hollywood celebrities - with speed and exhilaration. The sleek mahogany speedsters were introduced into a world of recreational boating that up and to then had been a staid, slow-paced world of rowing boats, steam-powered launches, and spartan sailing craft. Boating was never to be the same. With the gleaming, varnished mahogany, the nickel chrome hardware, and the plush, multiple seating areas these double and triple cockpit runabouts transformed the pleasure boating market, and numerous builders sprung up to sate the nation's quest for speed and performance. Renowned names like Dodge, Chris Craft, Gar Wood began building runabouts, often as a result of speedboat racing success, but none ever reached the pinnacle of craftsmanship and perfection that John Hacker did.

To possess a luxury item from a storied era nearly a century ago, in this high level of condition, is a rare opportunity. Stutz Bearcat motorcars, Piaget watches, Erte paintings, Frank Lloyd Wright homes, Hacker runabouts - all conjure up memories and images of the best artisans a time period, long-passed, had to offer. One does not merely possess such priceless artifacts, one serves in stewardship for the next generation to treasure and enjoy.

GAD-A-BOUT is turn-key, and ready to cut a wake and turn heads wherever her next dock and waterway await her.

Boat Highlights

GAD-A-BOUT is an award winning, custom Dolphin Deluxe triple-cockpit, Honduran mahogany-planked runabout, originally built for John Dunlap, the founder of the Dunlop Tire Company. She has had only four loving owners in her 92 years of existence, and all have pampered her and kept her out of the elements in a boathouse.

Re-powered for performance and ease of service in 1980, she traded her Sterling Petrol V12 for the ever-popular Chrysler 318 V8. All hardware and fittings remain original, as do the gauges and controls. She has been upholstered and refinished to stay true to her era.

Description

GAD-A-BOUT is a double-planked, Honduran mahogany, triple-cockpit runabout. She has been re-powered from her original, massive (and impossible to re-part) Sterling Petrol V12. She has been boathouse kept for her entire life, used exclusively in freshwater, and has been maintained to perfection. Other than the re-power, she has been kept original, and has all the in-period hardware, fittings, gauges, etc.

The helm is to port. She has the common, floor-mounted gear selector, wooden steering wheel with throttle, and push-button start. All gauges and controls are as original. The windscreen is vented, and nighttime use is aided by the foredeck spotlight, mechanically operated from the helm. There is luxurious, plush seating for 8 - 10 in the two larger cockpits forward, plus the smaller "rumble" cockpit aft. All cockpits have (new) step pads and oriental rug deck covering.

With an amazing running attitude, with little bow lift, she is dry, quiet and comfortable. The aft cockpit benefits from the addition of the optional spray shield. John Hacker was an award-winning designer and builder of racing boats, and held over 20 speed records and five Gold Cup wins, among numerous other titles, trophies, and victories. The Hacker legacy is one of speed, and GAD-A-BOUT continues to offer a thrilling ride.

In the past six months she has received:
  • Refinishing with three coats of Pettit Z-spar varnish
  • Pettit Vivid bottom paint
  • New exhaust manifold and hoses
  • Trailer service including tires, bearings, and brakes
  • Engine service

She tows remarkable well, featuring a custom Elite dual axle trailer, with brakes, spare tire, and custom bunking. She offers a full-boat cover, along with individual cockpit covers. Fully appointed, she is offered with all lines, fenders, PFDs, and safety equipment.

GAD-A-BOUT is a multiple antique boat show award winner, including many Best of Show, People's Choice, and Best Triple Cockpit trophies.
