It was in 1954 that the first US owner commissioned the American Naval Architect Geerd N. Hendel to design a fast motor yacht based on his Coastal Corvette series of military vessels. The result by Abeking & Rasmussen, Yard N° 4996, was a stunningly beautiful example of German construction, double planked teak on oak frames, with an aluminium ring frame every five. Under her original name of VERDESEIN, she was strong and light, and was an immediate success. She was briefly named GENIE for a while, until her current name of SANS SOUCI was adopted for the rest of her life.
The current owner purchased her in the U.S.A. in 2008. SANS SOUCI was then Dock Expressed from Ft Lauderdale to Genoa in Italy, during which the VAT was paid, and then tugged to Viareggio, where in January 2009 the extensive works started at the world renowned yard, Guido Del Carlo, specialists in wooden construction.
Under the very knowledgeable eye of the experienced captain and shipyard owner, the vessel was completely emptied from stem to stern, frames and planks replaced or repaired where necessary. In total the double planking measures a total of 38mm thick – 18 + 20m of beautiful mature teak. Just the original deck was left, as the quality, thickness and length of the planking is impossible to find today. The aluminium watertight bulkheads were upgraded to satisfy modern regulations, and the beautiful interior paneling created.
The interior of SANS SOUCI is something very special. Probably never in the history of yacht restoration has so much attention to detail been given in the level of research and historical detail as was done in this case. The owner scoured all over Europe to find the original fittings he desired to create the unique 1920’s decor of the yacht. Light fittings, furniture, objects d’art, door handles and so on – all blend into a sumptuous and perfectly coordinated homogenous whole – a real masterpiece!
The engine room is of course modern, with no expense spared in bringing SANS SOUCI into an up to date superyacht. With her three generators, zero speed stabilisers, ample battery packs, two water-makers, air conditioning, and so on, she has nothing to envy her younger sisters. With the generous crew quarters and mess, an owner can have ample privacy without compromising comfort. And if so desired, with just a few alterations to engine room insulation, SANS SOUCI could be put into Maltese commercial class.
Now on the market for the first time in her current configuration, SANS SOUCI is waiting for a new owner, with the vision and aesthetic sensibility to take on a unique and very special yacht. Rather like the classic car market, if correctly maintained a vessel like SANS SOUCI will hold her value for decades to come.
