Company History

Joe Neber, a native Miamian and avid fisherman, was on his way to law school, but a summer job at Sea-Vee changed the trajectory of his life.

Two years later, in 1984, he founded Contender Boats and launched the iconic Classic 25. Today, Contender Boats manufactures about 350 boats a year in its shipyard in Homestead, Florida. Ranging in size from 25 to 44 feet, Contender Boats leads the industry in the world of center console sportfishing.

As the president and owner of Contender Boats, Joe Neber has created a company that thrives on the water. He has created several Contender models that you can read about below – each offering the best in custom options in yachts for sale.

“Joe Neber is a passionate fisher and boatsman, and has been working in resource conservation, so much so, that he was name 2016 Conservation Partner of the Year by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation was created by Congress in 1984 to work with the public and private sectors to protect and restore the nation’s fish, wildlife, plants and habitats.”

The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation maintains these conservation endeavors in all 50 States and United States territories to ensure a better future, and the President and owner of Contender Boats, Joe Neber, was honored by them. This demonstrates his dedication to the oceans and fish, and gives a strong backbone to the Contender company, making them stand for something important.

360 Degrees of Fish-Ability

Contender center console boats make it easy to fight a fish anywhere on the boat.

Along with portability, here are just a few other reasons why new and used Contender sport fishing boats are so popular:

  • cockpits go all the way to the engines,
  • toe-kick design allows you to lean in and brace yourself against the rail and, as every angler knows, you can get on a fish faster from the bow.

Contender, the Benchmark of Center Consoles

There’s a running debate between inboard and outboard builders and owners as to which raises more fish. Contender, often referred to as the benchmark of center consoles, chooses to power all its center console boats with Yamaha outboard engines. They’re ideal for recreational and inshore fishing, easy to access, store and service. Plus, their fuel efficient, and the demand for used outboard motors is huge.

Built for Saltwater Fishing and Tournament Fishing

“Saltwater fishing and tournament fishing go hand-in-hand. Practice on saltwater and you will only get better when the time comes for a competition. Saltwater fishing and tournament fishing can be competitive, if done right. Although saltwater fishing can be relaxing off a pier, once you head out to the deep sea, it becomes a thrilling challenge.”

Contender center consoles were built for saltwater fishing and tournament fishing – they are strong, light, and very fast, which is what the avid fisherman seeks when looking for a boat.
