Nautor’s Swan - one of the premier composite sailing yacht builders of Series production yachts commissioned German Frers Sr. to design a flagship for the Swan fleet. Subsequently 5 total Swan 112’s were built and delivered.  “Mystery” is 112/02 and was delivered in late 2000 as “No Logic”.   She differs from several of her sisterships in having a low wraparound deckhouse and single saloon “up” layout which allows a smaller 4th double SR ensuite forward.  Her interior was designed by Dick Young and classic in style while offering the owner and crew areas good volume and storage.   

The Frers design pedigree is evident on “Mystery” with her easily driven hull form and powerful sail plan while Nautor engineered the systems and machinery to megayacht levels of quality and redundancy.  The Swan 112 series is the pinnacle of Finnish yacht building excellence in design, fit, finish and systems.   “Mystery” has benefitted from liberal refit expenditures including a complete mechanical refit/rebuild in 2007, complete repainting and mast/rigging refit in 2012, 2015 and in 2017 she was fitted with new generators and her main engine's MTU W-6 service.   All service was completed at STP shipyards in Mallorca Spain which is the yacht's home port and winter location.

Nautor’s Swan - one of the premier composite sailing yacht builders of Series production yachts commissioned German Frers to design a flagship for the Swan fleet in the late 1990s. Subsequently a total of five Swan 112’s were built and delivered. “Mystery” is 112/02 and was delivered in late 2000 as “No Logic”. She differs from her later sisterships in having a wraparound deckhouse windshield and single saloon “up” layout as well as a smaller 4th double stateroom forward and to starboard of the saloon. Her interior was designed by Dick Young and while classic in style she offers a comfotable bright interior for both guests and crew.  One notable feature of the Swan 112 is the enormous and well designed engineroom and technical areas.  She also has a large tender garage aft as well as good starage, captive winch systems and a carbon Souther Spars mast and furling boom.   






The Frers design pedigree is evident on “Mystery” with her easily driven hull form and powerful sail plan. Nautor engineered her systems and machinery to megayacht levels of quality and redundancy. The Swan 112 series is the pinnacle of Finnish yacht building excellence in design, fit, finish and systems.



























The hull is of single skin construction built in female mould using glass fibre reinforced vinylester laminate. A high proportion of the fibers are unidirectional, giving a stiff laminate with excellent strength and fatigue properties. Structural bulkheads are of foam-cored plywood sandwich construction and laminated to hull and deck. Stiffener flanges are unidirectional lay-ups. Engine beds are of GRP with steel inserts. Special care is taken to assure rigid foundation and proper adhesion to hull.






Ballast Keel:



The ballast bulb is lead casting alloyed with antimony and bolted to a steel fin. Keel bolts are of high-tensile stainless steel.









The rudder is foam filled GRP with tapered lightweight hollow composite stock, supported by two self-aligning roller bearings. Lower tip of rudder designed to break before the stock, new in 2010.






Steering System:



Sprocket and chain steering gear, sheaves provided with guards to prevent jamming. Aluminum steering quadrant bolted to rudder stock. Twin 55" destroyer type wheels with teak trim and disconnecting clutch, 4.5 turns H.O. to H.O. Pedestals with roller bearings and friction brake. Emergency steering by autopilot.






Dinghy Garage:



Storage in lazarette for a 4.3 m hard bottom inflatable AB dinghy. ** The tender does not fit inside unless the outboard is off and the tubes deflated. Hydraulically operated transom platform and winch for launching and hauling. A ladder with teak threads and hand rail leads from the main deck to the garage. A swim ladder with flush stainless steel fittings can be attached to the platform. Both ladders have storage in dinghy garage. The garagealso hasa hot and cold shower with a hose adapter.









A 3.5 m hydraulically operated folding passarelle is recessed into starboard lazarette. The passarelle has a remote control operation as well as control buttons from inside the starboard lazarette. (Rebuilt 2015)






Side Boarding Ladder:



A hydraulically operated side boarding ladder is recessed amidships on starboard side. Halogen lights are installed to light the steps. The ladder has aremote control as well as control buttons on a wandering lead. Deck shower adjacent to the ladder. (Rebuilt 2015)






Stern Anchor:



Storage for stern anchor on port side in lazarette.

Teak Woodwork:


Laid teak battens originally 60 x 16 mm on side decks, coach roof and cockpit soles, glued and vacuum bagged without screws. GRP bulwark with teak capping varnished with of high gloss varnish (currently 12 coats). Removable foot supports for helmsman. Teak decks are in good condition, recently sanded.

Cabin sole:


Floorboards are made of a special noise reducing plywood/polymer sandwich. The top face is teak with holly inserts. The bottom face is gaboon. The floorboards are varnished with eight coats of urethane varnish and have the same hand-rubbed satin finish as the rest of the interior. All floorboards are lying on vibration damping materials and provided with hinges where frequent access to the bilge is required. Suction lifters provided.






Partitions are of sandwich construction, consisting of two layers of 6mm marine plywood with a core of acoustic foam and a noise barrier in between. Separate skin panels of 5 mm marine plywood with 0.6 teak veneers.






All hanging lockers are fitted with rails for dress hanging and hooks where practical. Internal light automatically switches on when doors are opened.




Blinds and Screens:


All opening deck hatches are fitted with Ocean Air roller blinds and mosquito screens.


Master cabin deck hatches are electrically opened. The deckhouse and hull windows are fitted with electrically operated blinds.






All mattresses are of sprung type high quality manufactured for marine use and fitted with covers for protection. Mattress bases are Deltaflex-type batten nets to provide ventilation on underside. Each berth is fitted with a canvas lee cloth or plywood leeboard.






All upholstery foams and fillings are non-flammable. Cotton dust covers for all sofas and settees.






Owner and guest bathrooms have teak-veneered bulkheads and teak floorboards with holly inserts. Corian counter tops and splash back with under mounted sinks. Glass door to shower stall with custom plated gold hardware. Mirror doors on bathroom lockers. Vinyl covered overhead panels.




Bathroom Fittings:


Each bathroom is fitted with heated towel rails, 2 towel hooks, 1 toilet roll holder, 1 toilet brush and holder, 1 concealed waste bin, 1 soap bar holder, 2 glass holders and 1 hair dryer.














Partitions between cabins and corridors, etc. are built to meet a 30 dB (A) reduction of airborne sound. Hull above propeller area sound insulated.

Propeller and Stern Gear:


The propeller shaft is made of corrosion resistant steel. Shaft supported by water-lubricated rubber bearings at bracket and stern tube. Four-bladed controllable pitch skew-back propeller with feathering position, diameter 1,0 m. Propeller pitch is adjusted automatically according to RPM setting.




Exhaust System:


Dry exhaust system with fiberglass silencers and gas/water separators installed for both main engine and diesel generators. Water is discharged below waterline midships. Exhaust gases from main engine and diesel generators exit under transom. Silencers are provided with drain tap and flexibly supported on vibration dampening brackets.




Fuel System:


Fuel capacity approximately 6,500 liters in six stainless steel tanks.


The tanks are provided with baffles, inspection covers, level indicators and are vented to deck. The tanks have individual shutoff valves and are pressure tested to 0.3 bar. One 2” deck filler line is provided, close to the station of maximum beam.

The feed lines to the engine and diesel generators are equipped with 10 µ fuel filter/water separators with water alarm. For main engine is a dual filter mounted so as to permit uninterrupted running of the engine while changing filter elements.


Single filters are used for diesel generators.




Lubricating Oil System:


Two 60 liter oil tanks are provided, one clean oil tank and one dirty oil tank. One deck filler connection provided for each tank. The dirty oil tank can be filled from the engine and emptied to the deck with an electric pump via a valve chest.




Starting System:


The engine and diesel generators have their own starting battery sets.

The hydraulic system is designed to provide the oil pressure and flow needed for the onboard functions and also to control these efficiently.


Power Sources:

The system has five separate power sources. Each source can be operated independently. The power sources are:

As the sail handling is independent on hydraulics it is important to have alternative power sources to ensure trouble free operation.


Ring Main:

The hydraulic system is a ring main system fed from the above mentioned sources. This means that each control valve is situated close to the operating unit, giving a precise control. This allows for a quiet and smooth operation, eliminating inherent hydraulic noise and vibration.


Oil Reservoir:

All pumps are fed from the oil reservoir, on which the two DC power unites are mounted. The reservoir also has a water cooling circuit, a level switch and a return line filter.


Flow Limiting Valves:

Each individual function in the hydraulic system is equipped with a flow limiting valve, thus enabling the right amount of oil to be fed to each function.


Variable Displacement Pumps:

The variable displacement pumps allow only a set amount of power to be drawn from the power source.

Most functions require either high speed with little power or slow speed with high power. Such demands can be met by these pumps.


Automatic Power:

The DC power pumps will start up automatically depending on demand.


Crash Stop:

Emergency crash stop for the sail handling hydraulics is provided on Starboard steering pedestals.


Main Engine PTO Pump:

A variable displacement pump is connected to the reduction gear PTO via an electronically operated integral clutch. The main purpose for the pump is to provide the power for the bow thruster, the secondary purpose to operate the sail settings functions. Because the engine also needs sufficient power for propulsion the pump output is suitably limited.


Generator PTO Pumps:

A variable displacement pump is connected to each generator PTO via an electrically operated clutch. The main purpose for each pump is to provide the power for sail handling. Because the generator also needs sufficient power for generating electricity a maximum of two main functions can be operated simultaneously by one PTO pump.


DC Pumps:

The two 5 kW DC powered units’ primary function is for the silent running of the yacht. This is the case at night when generators are stopped and hydraulic power is required.

Their secondary function is as a backup for sail handling in the event of an emergency when the diesel generators are not available. Then the speed of the hydraulic functions will be reduced and only one function can be operated at a time.


Bow thruster:

45 kW bow thruster, retractable type, hydraulically driven from PTO on the main engine reduction gear. The thruster is producing approximately 600 kp thrust.






In the design of the interior and the technical systems special care has been taken to reduce vibration and noise in the accommodation and recreation areas of the vessel. The design of the structure was undertaken with due regard to minimizing the transmission of vibration and noise to the main hull, interior, mast and deck.



Machinery and equipment, which may be potential sources of vibration are insulated from the main structure by suitable and efficient damping arrangements. Settings are designed to avoid resonance with the major exciting frequencies of the machinery.


Noise Transmission:

The transmission of structure-borne noise, where electric cabling, pipes and equipment are attached to hull structure or pass through bulkheads and deck heads forming boundaries to machinery spaces is attenuated by means of resilient mountings, insulated attachments and pipe hangers.


Attention has been paid to the selection of ventilation fans and machinery and to their location onboard with the objective of avoiding excessive noise levels in accommodation spaces, deck recreation areas and navigating positions.


Adequate sound insulation of machinery spaces is provided to prevent passage of airborne noise into accommodation areas.






Sea water hoses of reinforced PVC tubing, fresh water piping of polypropylene, nylon and copper tubing.

Hot water pipes to be insulated with pipe insulation. Special attention has been paid to ensuring that bilge pump suction pipes are mounted in easily accessible positions to allow debris to be cleared.


Particularly in the engine room, piping is color coded with stick on labels, including an arrow to indicate direction of flow, so that the contents of pipes can be recognized.


Freshwater System:

A pressurized hot and cold water system is installed. Hot and cold water is distributed to all heads, to the galley, to deck showers and to deck wash outlets on fore, mid and aft deck. Filler line on side deck is led to a valve chest located in crew quarters. The valve chest has valves for each water pressure pump. A hot water Circulation pump is also installed to provide instant hot water throughout the yacht.


Pressure Pump:

Water pressure system with Grundfoss MQ3 or equivalent pump, to assure quiet operation. One 80 liter pressure tank to be connected to the system. A standby 24 volt DC spare pump is plumbed in.



Two tanks with a total capacity of approximately 2,500 liters. Tanks are welded of stainless steel and provided with baffles, inspection covers, level indicators and vent pipes. All tanks are pressure tested to 0.3 bar. A central gauge with selector switch is located in the galley.


Deck Showers:

One deck shower adjacent to the side boarding ladder and one deck shower in dinghy garage. Both showers have hose connections.


Water Maker:

One Sea Recovery Coral Sea 13M3/SW/S1 water maker with a production of 544 1/h and equipped with remote monitor.

The water maker is provided with dual 5 micron cartridge pre-filters and oil water separator. Also included is a multimedia filter and a cleaning tank. The salinity monitoring is automatic and temperature compensated. Water maker system provided with proper flushing and pickling systems as to permit easy maintenance.


City Water:

City water connection that allows shore water to be piped directly into the pressure water system via a pressure regulator and check valve.


Sea Water System:

Electrical anchor/deck wash pump with connections on fore and mid deck. The anchor chain wash down has nozzles on the bow that direct water jets onto the chain. 20 m (66ft.) A separate fire pump is fitted with connections at mid ships. Three fire hoses provided.


Drainage System


Grey Water Tanks:

Two stainless steel grey water tanks, with a total capacity of approximately 800 liters, fitted with baffles, inspection covers, level indicators and vent lines. The tanks are emptied by electrical pumps.


Bilge Pumps:

There are five separate bilges, fore peak, forward, engine room, aft and lazarette bilge. Each bilge is equipped with a submersible DC pump 140l/minute. Two manual 100 l/minute bilge pumps are installed, one for fore peak ad forward bilge, the other for aft and lazarette bilge. One engine driven manual clutch pump 250 l/minute is installed as an emergency pump.

Black Water Tanks:

Two stainless steel black water tanks, one forward and one aft. Capacity about 300 liters each, with indication at ¾ full and full.

The tanks are fitted with baffles, inspection covers and vent lines. The tanks can be emptied by a 24 V DC electrical pumps or by deck suction lines.


Gas Installation:

Space for three 6 kg gas bottles (diameter 305 mm, height 520 mm) in drained locker. Pressure regulator (30 mbar), Automatic leak detectors fitted in the Galley and the Gas locker. Remote magnetic shutoff valve are placed inside the locker. There is also a manual gas shutoff valve in the galley.

Air Conditioning:

A central chilled waterborne system, 120,000 BTU with electric heating mode is fitted for whole accommodation. Individual temperature control in each cabin.


Engine Room Ventilation:

Air inlets with water trap. Two fans are provided, one for inlet and one for outlet. Power supply to fans is interrupted on engine room for extinguisher release. Fans are both pressure and temperature controlled.

2 Air handlers fitted to provide air conditioning in the engine room.


Air Compressors:

One Hydrovain 220V low-pressure compressor (6 bar) for main entrance hatch, drop board and cockpit gates. One low pressure 24V (6 bar) back-up compressor with air connection in port side deck hatch.

High-pressure Bauyer dive compressor (230 bar) for filling of dive bottles located in lazarette.






Special attention was given to the installation for good accessibility and avoidance of chafing. All cables are labeled with identification numbers at both ends.

At watertight bulkheads wires run up to deckhead height to penetrate the bulkhead or are sealed in place to produce the best possible water tightness.


DC System:

2-pole 24 V insulated return DC-system for lighting blowers, pumps, etc. Wires are sized to minimize voltage drop. All batteries use series connections in order to avoid circulating currents between batteries.


Service Batteries:

The service batteries are of maintenance-free traction gel cell type. The batteries consist of two individual 24 V banks referred to as service battery 1 and 2. Each service battery bank has a capacity of 2,000 Ah/8 h. The battery banks consist of 12 batteries of 2 V each.


Starting Batteries:

The starting batteries are of maintenance-free Gel Cell. There are three 24 V banks, one for the main engine and one for each generator, each with a capacity of 55 Ah/20h. There is also a 24 V 55 Ah battery for supply of main engine control system. Each set consist of 2 pcs of 1 V each.


Alternative DC Power Supply:

There are provisions for the following:

1. In an emergency situation the radios can be fed from the main engine starting battery.

2. The DC loads can be switched in groups (inverters, hydraulic power pack and general DC consumers) to one of the service battery banks.

3. Paralleling button for main engine starting and generator 1 batteries.

4. Paralleling button for main engine and generator 2 batteries.


AC System:

400 V three phase five-wire AC system. The AC system can be fed by the diesel generators, shore power inlet or from DC/AC inverters. The AC system is equipped with a PLC controlled power shedding system.

Generator voltage is three phase 400 V AC 50 Hz. The generators are mounted on hydro elastic sound/vibration absorbing seating’s, inside proprietary sound shields.


Shore Power:

Inlet at the stern of the yacht. The inlet leads to an Atlas Energy System frequency converter, 25 kVA. (New 2014). The frequency converter accepts inlet voltages between 190 – 250 V and 350 – 520 V AC, 47 to 63 Hz and 1 or 3 phase, and converts them to 400 V 50 Hz three phase.

Shore inlet socket is contained in a locker with hinged lid. Shore power cable 15 mm is stored in a bin by a cable master unit.

DC Alternators:

Two 140 A alternators on each main engine for service battery charging. Each main engine starting battery is charged by a 55 A alternator on the engine. These alternators are equipped with external three step voltage regulators, voltage sensing battery is charged by a 35 A alternator on the diesel generator.


AC Chargers:

Eight Mastervolt, Mass 24 V 100 A chargers with 3 step charge characteristics, for service batteries (four chargers per battery set). (All new 2015)


Starting batteries can be charged by a Mastervolt Mass 5 A charger with the same characteristics as for the service batteries. (All new 2015)

Sailing Instruments (All new 2015)


Main Unit:

A comprehensive package, consisting of Brookes & Gatehouse Hercules 5000 with central processor unit, performance processor unit, masthead wand unit, speed/temperature sensor, depth sensor and external alarm as well as a Robertson compass and a GPS compass on the rig.


Digital Displays:

Two Full Function Displays (FDD) located in the control room and additional FFDs at the helm, in the Owner’s cabin, in the crew cabins, nanny cabin, raised saloon, and in crew mess. Five 20/20 repeaters in cockpit, all with control buttons.


Heel angle, trim and barometric pressure displays are also provided in the Navigation station.


Auto Pilot: (All new 2015)

A hydraulic autopilot is driving the steering quadrant via twin cylinders. Control units positioned at both steering pedestals and the nav station. There is a hydraulic back-up for emergency use, supply from main hydraulic system.


Navigation (All new 2015)



The NAVNET TZ TOUCH charter plotting system provides for LCD dispays with chart and radar overlay. The displays are 15 screens, one installed in the control room, and one HATTALAND 15” HIGH BRIGH on each steering pedestal. The system is operated by mouse controls at each display.



The radar is a 48 mile Furuno Radar. Scanner is mounted on first spreader in mast.



The GPS is integrated with the Furuno system and is connected to the Brookes & Gatehouse system and also to the autopilot through an NMEA interface link allowing automatic steering between way points.



A Robertson rate compass is fitted under the galley floor and a GPS directional compass is fitted on the rig.

Two Suuto 5” magnetic steering compasses provided, balanced for both hemispheres.







Sat Com:



A mini-M (fleet 33) and a Fleet Broad band (FB500) sat com with handsets in the control room is integrated with the PABX telephone system.






VHF radio: (New 2015)



The Simrad HS90 DSC VHF has three handsets, one in the crew mess, one in the control room and one at the helm, with intercom possibility between the three headsets and Loud hail function off the rig.






Telephone System:



The onboard telephone system (PABX) has one line to shore, common for voice and fax. It also gives a possibility to communicate between all cabins, saloon, galley and control room.
