The 400km coastline from the north-eastern corner to Kuatan attracts visitors from all over due to its relative unspoiled nature – relative compared to the more tourist-dense west side. There are several islands to explore and by way of superyacht is quite possibly the best way to travel. The best time to visit the seasonal east coast is between April and October; the high season runs from June to August. This is to avoid the extremes of weather that happen outside of this window.

Starting off on the north-eastern coast, where the country collides with Thailand, take a trip to the Perhentian Islands. These islands are famed for the fantastic diving opportunities. Take a trip to the Pinnacle (or Tokong Laut, ‘Temple of the Sea’) and the Sugar Wreck, an easily accessible 3500-tonne sugar hauler that sank in 2000 and sits only 18 meters down on the seabed.

The island of Redang is famous for its clear waters, sandy palm fringed beaches and basically its laid-back island vibe. It also has a string of high-end resorts too, so give the chef the night off and head in for an opulent meal on land.

Probably the most famous of the island strings is the Tioman Islands. The largest, Tioman offers great hiking opportunities, in fact to walk off chef’s indulgent menus opt for the hiking trail that takes you right across the island through the jungle. Just don’t forget your bug spray.
