Charles Nicholson, arguably the most famous yacht designer of the 20th century, renowned for the J-Class yachts such as Shamrock, Velsheda and Endeavour, as well as Veta (later Creole), designed and built Folly for his own personal use at the Camper & Nicholson shipyard in Gosport, UK.

More recently, she was acquired by the Argentine yacht designer German Frers and comprehensively restored at Cantiere dell’Argentario in Italy. Having just completed a meticulous repainting of her hull and exterior revarnishing including her mast and spars, she is now in A1 condition.

Folly 1909 is currently lying in the South of France and available for inspection.

She is seriously for sale and ready to compete in the Mediterranean classic regattas.

“Folly has a larger sail area than any 8-metre yacht yet built and is very well able to carry it. It will be noticed that, though full advantage has been taken by the designer of the freeboard allowance, weight has been saved in both fore and aft overhangs.”

THE YACHTSMAN, 9th SEPTEMBER 1909

CAMPER & NICHOLSON'S HISTORIC FLEET

Camper & Nicholsons’ history is synonymous with that of yachting itself. No other firm has been at the forefront of yachting throughout its evolution.

It is a story that intertwines generations of the Nicholson family with leaders of industry, technology and society. Whist the British royal family remained at the apex of yachting society, Camper & Nicholsons supplied, maintained and updated their many iconic yachts.

The pioneering ethos of Camper & Nicholsons and its clientele have made landmarks in yachting.

Camper & Nicholsons are currently planning a partnership with the British National Maritime Museum where the firm’s archive is held. The relationship between the yachts and their original designs is a symbiotic one. By assisting in the cataloguing of the archive and thus making original information available they will promote the preservation and meaningful restoration of the C&N fleet.
