ACCOMMODATIONS

General

Modern and elegant, comfortable and classic, M/Y Barbara is truly a timeless yacht. The exterior styling and interior design is by Sorgiovanni Designs. The exterior design brief for the yacht was clear and simple: “To create a look that is unique, unlike anything else. And at the same time, it was to be timeless and classic with a preference for curvy rather than angular lines,” says Sam Sorgiovanni. Her modern dark blue hull contrasts effectively with a white superstructure and with no sharp edges, she maintains an organic form with large elliptical windows.

Sorgiovanni went to great lengths to create a form where the hull and superstructure appeared to be one. He says the client was pleased with his initial pen and ink sketches, which highlighted oval portholes and cut outs in a natural and fluid way. “Barbara embodies minimalism and purity in her lines,” says Sorgiovanni.

The interior design follows the exterior styling. The owner wanted a relaxed comfortable interior with a rich blend of textures and natural materials to create a resort-like feel. The other specific request was to have an elevated Owner’s stateroom with restricted access to ensure privacy. To that end, the aluminium superstructure has an exclusive split- level arrangement, with reserved areas for the owner on the raised upper decks. The owner’s office with high raised ceilings, skylights and full glass sliding doors of almost 4m with access to the large retractable balconies both port and starboard, required complex and detailed strength analysis before engineering. The result is a spectacular and inspiring workspace that extends seamlessly with the exterior decks and casual seating. If required, concealed doors in the ceiling can be deployed to create a private conference environment with privacy from other guests.

The open-air feeling is also a feature of the Upper Saloon with fully opening side windows and folding balconies. Outdoor luxury was very important and the Upper Deck aft with its expansive informal dining and food buffet is a centre for all living on a daily basis. The additional lounge seating makes this deck extremely practical and loved by the Owners.

Of particular note is the ornamental element in the central stair column, whereby the glass elevator shaft was wrapped in a beautiful gnarled silvered root system of an ancient tree rising continuously through two decks. This extraordinary work of art took a full year to complete.

All six Guest Cabins are located on the Main Deck forward enabling guests to move in their own space. The forward two cabins can convert to create a large VIP or second Master Cabin for versatility during chartering and multiple Guests alike.

Amenities

Fitness and wellbeing are also major considerations for the yacht. There is a massive fully equipped gymnasium incorporated between the funnel structures on the Sundeck. On the Lower Deck is a wellness area specifically designed to be in a quiet and relaxed part of the vessel with the addition of a Beauty Salon and massage treatment room.

Watersports are aplenty with multiple watercraft housed in a dedicated garage that connects to a lazarette with all watersports equipment well stored and located. The space leads out onto the swim platform which can be lowered to create a landing dock for water sports equipment yet still allows tenders to dock without interference.

The helicopter touch-and-go pad, 2.5 tonnes hidden crane and Jacuzzi area on the sundeck, were an engineering challenge, but very well executed.

Hull Structure

The underwater hull form is specially optimised, and Marin tested for better speed performance, excellent maneuverability and high stability. Integrated tender hatches, fold down swim platform hidden life raft hatches, recessed boarding ladders and large hull windows, required an extensive finite element analysis for the hull construction.
Barbara is a masterpiece of engineering, design, technology and craftsmanship.
