KZ 5 was built for the New Zealand Americas Cup team by McMullen & Wing for the 1987 America’s Cup in Fremantle, Australia. She was later sold to a Japanese syndicate and then sold and relocated to Newport, RI in time for the New York Yacht Club sesquicentennial summer as CANNONBALL. She continued on quite successfully in the very hotly contested Newport 12M Class racing as FURY, HISSAR and presently LAURA.

After successfully serving four different individual owners she is now ready to continue on with class racing in her respective Grand Prix 12 Meter Class or PHRF fleet racing.

Her next owner will receive a proper racing yacht in exceptional form, function and overall condition. Amongst numerous upgrades like all hydraulics replaced, new deck layout package including replacement of original winches and hardware she also sports a new keel designed by David Pedrick and updated rig and rudder built by Jim Gretzky.

Ring frames forward and aft.
Four composite trapezoidal 4”x 6” frames forward and four aft on 50” centers all fiberglass tabbed to the hull. 
Four aluminum 5”x 5” I-beam frames amidships on 48” centers, bolted through the fiberglass hull. The bolts pass through reinforced laminate in the frame stations and are glassed over and faired on the exterior of the hull. 
Deck has a Nomex core with high density foam in high load areas. 
Mast step, chain plates and keel load area are supported by a welded aluminum framework 3/8”x 5” to 16” reinforced with a 3/8” box frame, 20 ½”x 6 ½” at the chain plates and mast step. The keel bolt frame is ½” welded aluminum with a ½” bottom plate. 
Keel is lead with iron wings, bolted on. 
Rudder is carbon with a carbon stock. 
Trim tab is fiberglass with bronze supports. 
Gretsky mast is aluminum with Nitronic 50 rod standing rigging;

Internal ballast is by lead pigs in the keel bolt box and around the mast step.

Hull Interior

As with most 12 Meter America’s Cup
racing yachts, the interior is open from bow
to stern. There are no cabins simply efficient storage areas and easy access to equipment.
