Vessel Overview

SONNY was designed by Dieter Empacher to provide exceptional performance, a striking shearline with classic lines and extremely simple handling, with in-boom furling and all hydraulic sail handling functions.  She was built by the masters at Brooklin Boatyard, one of Maine’s finest.  Her interior is styled in the Herreschoff tradition, with raised and fielded panels in white, complimented by varnished cherry and teak & holly cabin soles.  She is a well-balanced combination of simple, thoroughbred performance under sail and an elegantly crafted yacht style interior with all amenities.

Below decks, SONNY’s custom joiner work is reminiscent of the classic Herreshoff style, with soft white painted panels accented by bright varnished American cherry trim.  Cabin soles are bright varnished teak and maple and the salon seating  is upholstered in diamond-quilt deep blue leather to compliment the style and elegance of the salon.  Stainless opening ports are abundant in the salon, galley and aft stateroom and ventilation is plentiful everywhere via a good number of opening hatches.

Main Salon

SONNY’s full width MAIN SALON is generous in size with a large oval settee surrounding an elegantly crafted varnished teak dining table with inlaid holly compass rose.  To port is a fore and aft settee with storage under and lockers outboard.  Aft of the settee is a large L-shaped NAVIGATION STATION with chart table/desk, again beautifully detailed in American cherry with accents of white. The navigation station is comprehensively equipped with navigation, performance and communication electronics and access to the electronics panel for the yacht as well.  Deck prisms provide lighting from above, and accentuate the varnished spruce hull sheathing.

The GALLEY is aft to starboard of the companionway.  The layout is well designed for cooking underway or in port, with a double sink and abundant countertop and locker space on centerline with convenient access to centerline machinery below.  Cooking and refrigeration is outboard to starboard with a Force 10 stainless/ceramic three burner electric stove, oven, broiler and extractor vent hood; and a GE Advantium microwave/convection oven.  Aft to starboard is the front loading stainless refrigerator/freezer, and an under-counter beverage cooler drawer by Viti Frigo.

Aft Owners Stateroom

The AFT OWNER’S STATEROOM, is full width with double berths port and starboard, and a comfortable seat on centerline. The stateroom has plenty of storage in drawers, lockers, shelves and hanging lockers. Natural light and ventilation are abundant via opening ports and hatches.  The OWNER’S HEAD is forward to port, with a generous stall shower, Raritan vacuum flush head, vanity and plenty of storage lockers.

Two Guest Staterooms

TWO GUEST STATEROOMS are forward of the salon, with large upper and lower berths. The upper berths are oversize, nearly a double.  Each stateroom also has an opening hatch and portlight, and storage in drawers, lockers and hanging locker.  The GUEST HEAD is to port, with Raritan vacuum flush head, shower, vanity, lockers and hatch.  There is a shared, large shower compartment with sink and vanity forward of both guest cabins.

Captains Cabin

The CAPTAIN’s CABIN is fully forward with over and under large single berths for two, comfortable seating, gear stowage and a large opening hatch to the foredeck.

Hull and Deck

SONNY’s low profile, low cabinhouse profile turns heads in every port. She has a custom reverse transom that opens hydraulically to reveal a hidden swim platform that is also used for dinghy access.  Her balanced, carbon fiber spade rudder and Lewmar Mamba  steering system provide exceptional control and her custom foil shaped keel with modified bulb and wings, provide the best in hydrodynamics.

SONNY'S Large Center Cockpit surrounds a custom varnished teak drop-leaf table with comfortable seating for 8. The helm station is aft in the cockpit within easy reach of controls for the the engine, bow thrusters, all winches and sail handling controls, autopilot and instrumentation. The cockpit offers excellent protection from the elements with cockpit dodger forward and full bimini for sun, spray and rain protection

Hull and Deck Construction:  Cold molded, wood-epoxy with Fiberglass external layer, composite hull construction with laminated frames and solid wood structural components and deadwood.  Solid marine plywood bulkheads with wood and/or laminate exterior surfaces.  One-piece composite deck, cabin house and cockpit structure, with TDS teak overlay.
