ABOUT AZZURA

AZZURA is a remarkable yacht in every respect, from her performance underbody and easily managed powerful rig designed by Doug Peterson, to her elegantly engineered, retractable and patented Jongert keel that gives her access to ports unavailable to most yachts of her size and performance.  Her three owner and guest staterooms, remarkably comfortable entertaining areas on deck and below, gourmet galley and separate crew accommodations have created a magnificent platform for cruising the world’s oceans in absolute comfort and safety.  She has been maintained to the highest yacht standards by her original build captain until November 2015, (and since then by a retired U.S. Navy Captain) including the most comprehensive refit ever undertaken by the Jongert Shipyard in 2007-8, which returned nearly every aspect of the yacht to new condition. To this day, her engine room virtually glistens.  She has been maintained with an open pocketbook – and a lot of pride.  With her extensive spare parts and tool inventory, Azzura is ready now for worldwide cruising.

Overview

AZZURA is a remarkable yacht in every respect, from her performance underbody and easily managed powerful rig designed by Doug Peterson, to her elegantly engineered, retractable and patented Jongert keep that gives her access to ports unavailable to most yachts of her size and performance.  Her three owner and guest staterooms, remarkably comfortable entertaining areas on deck and below, gourmet galley and separate crew accommodations have created a magnificent platform for cruising the world’s oceans in absolute comfort and safety.  She has been maintained to the highest standards by her original build captain until November 2015, (and since then by a retired U.S.

Deck Layout

AZZURA’s deck layout is a masterful blend of luxurious living and practical yacht operation.  Fully forward, her Bruce anchor fits perfectly into the stem of the hull.  The foredeck houses a large sail locker, including storage for a backup Avon Tender and 15hp outboard, and private access to the crew area forward. The low-profile cockpit pilothouse is another elegantly engineered Jongert marvel.  The cabin top that covers the protected cockpit area hydraulically retracts to half-size, allowing any amount of sunlight desired.  This protected area houses the interior steering forward to starboard and a navigating station to port, both with unrestricted visibility since the primary tender is stowed in the aft garage instead on the bow.

Immediately aft of the helm/navigation area, large varnished teak tables port and starboard provide seating for 10 in a truly sumptuous social area that is truly the heart of the yacht. Dining is a delight here, with or without a roof over your head. The cockpit is well protected, extremely safe, and two steps lower than the outside steering cockpit farther aft which offers a clear view to the rig, sailplan and horizon above the coach roof.

Aft of the upper cockpit, winches are grouped for easy out-of-the-way sail handling allowing for guests to lounge around the helm in complete safety.  A large garage holds the 14’ yacht tender that is easily deployed from the hydraulically opening transom, which provides an enormous “beach” (11’ x 6.5’). A ladder leads into the water and steps lead to deck level.  The hydraulic Passerelle telescopes out from the starboard side of the transom for secure stern boarding at the dock.

Accommodations

The main companionway to AZZURA’s interior is accessed by the masterfully crafted, signature Jongert, curved teak door, which electrically retracts out of view.  The MAIN SALON has an elliptical dining area to port, surrounding a custom teak table by Jongert that expands and retracts with interior folding leaves, and two dining chairs inboard. To port of the companionway, the fully equipped wet bar has a refrigerator (new 2016), ice maker (new 2016), sink and stowage for bottles and glasses.  Outboard to starboard, the lounge area has a full-length couch with end table (with wine/liquor storage below) aft, cocktail table inboard and a reclining chair aft, facing the entertainment center on the forward bulkhead, with cabinetry on each side for storage of china, silverware and crystal. The salon has opening ports, port and starboard, which accentuate the area’s already large beam width.  Additional light and natural ventilation is provided via overhead opening hatches and cabin side portlights. The salon is comfortable in all respects is indeed, the social hub of the yacht’s interior.

Owner and Guest accommodations are aft of the salon, down a teak stairway to the centerline passageway.
The OWNER’S STATEROOM is fully aft and full beam of the yacht, with a Queen size berth on centerline, vanity, settee and bookshelves outboard to starboard, two double-opening full-height closets on the forward bulkhead (one with shelves and drawers) and entertainment center to port. The owner’s large ensuite head is outboard to port with inlaid floors, ample counter and storage space and Jongert’s signature round shower stall with teak seat.

The TWIN GUEST STATEROOMS, have identical accommodations with wide single beds and night table between, drawer storage below the berths, hanging locker, bookshelves, hull ports, TV/Stereo and ensuite head with stall shower.
At the forward end of the passageway is a foyer area with a small office desk and chair with HP Network Printer, Nav computer CPU and SatCom above.  To port, the watertight door to the engine room, complete with custom tool storage pouches, creates a soundproof barrier.  There are two additional lockers in this area including a proper ‘wet locker’ for foul weather gear.

Forward of the main salon to port, an automatic pneumatic sliding door leads to AZZURA’s service and crew area. To port is a full crew dinette, with the Miele washer/dryer below the seating. To starboard, the professionally equipped GALLEY has a full wall of refrigeration forward with four large boxes by Frigoboat that can each serve as either refrigerator or freezers.  The gimballed stainless steel Miele stove and extractor fan is outboard to starboard, surrounded by an abundance of counter and cabinet space.  The Miele Commercial grade dish washer will do a full load in just 14 minutes.  Above the centerline counter is a TV/entertainment area that swivels port or starboard to service the chef or the crew dinette. (See Galley List).

Forward of the galley are TWO CREW CABINS, each with hanging lockers, drawers and outboard shelves; and ensuite head. The port crew cabin has over/under staggered bunks. To starboard, the captain’s cabin has a lower bed which can be converted to a double and an upper single bed complete with fold down desk and book shelves to accommodate all the original build manuals. Full maintenance records from the original build faxes to the complete 2007 refit list have been cataloged and maintained.

The interior décor by Peter Sijm and Jongert finishwork aboard AZZURA is in a class of its own.  Interior woodwork is crafted of rich varnished teak, book-matched and complemented by cream-colored ultra-suede and azure blue.  Floors are carpeted except for the galley which has a European cork floor (2012) and guest/crew heads which are teak and Holly.  All cabins have individual temperature controls for the air-conditioning/heating system. Fresh air comes into the boat from 98’ (30m) up the mast for the air-conditioning/heating system and forced air ventilation. DC fans and natural ventilation are also an option. Curtains provide privacy.  A variety of lights from activity lights to overhead and courtesy lighting set the mood.  Closets are cedar-lined with automatic lights.  Bathrooms are white Corian, including the floor, with teak and metal accents. Toilets are fresh-water. Custom, round Jongert showers, mirrored medicine cabinets and plenty of counter space at each sink. A hot water circulation pump ensures instant hot water at all locations.

Remarks  The collaboration between Naval Architect Doug Peterson, the Jongert engineers and craftsmen, and Peter Sijm’s interior design, with AZZURA’s experienced original owner and her build captain, was a remarkable confluence to talent that created a very special yacht indeed.  Every detail of her design; from the cabin and A/C air intake at the top of the mast 90’ above the deck, to the book-matched panels of her varnished teak interior, her revolutionary Jongert retractable keel, Doug Peterson thoroughbred performance and elegant living spaces on deck and below, are details to be appreciated.

Throughout the history of this great yacht, those details have been appreciated by her owners and crew. She has been maintained to near perfection.  AZZURA is a yacht that need to be seen to be appreciated.
