Built in 1991 by Nautor Swan to design by German Frers, SPIRIT is a beautiful 26.6-meter sailing yacht, perfectly suited for all yachtsmens.

After a refit in 2014 by Yachting Developments, located in New Zealand, SPIRIT is more vibrant than ever. The refit’s key concept was to create a more modern look while retaining the yacht’s strong sea-going abilities, safety, solid cruising performance and reputation from a quality builder.

The work included removal of the aft deck and cockpit the addition of a new cockpit seating arrangement under a semi-fixed Bimini and the addition of twin wheels in place of the original single wheel. A new, larger, owners cabin was installed aft and accommodations on board increased with the addition of a new guest cabin in the forward sail stow area. All interior spaces were refitted. The yacht was completely rewired and received a twin generator, a full repaint and brand new sails.  Skilful use of composite enabled an overall weight reduction of five tonnes, resulting her extra speed and manoeuvrability when underway.

SPIRIT now is able to accommodate up to 10 guests in four comfortable staterooms. She runs with three crew members. She offers an open layout plan and alfresco living in her cockpit area. SPIRIT is a sleek and contemporary yacht, ideal for families.

COMMENTS

SPIRIT is a Bermudian cutter-rigged sloop, and the only Swan 90 deckhouse built.

She is a unique and beautiful yacht. Developed from the Swan 86 and with design by Frers and build by Nautor she benefits from this experienced teams work. The Frers hull is a tried and true, fast, comfortable world cruiser.

Throughout her life the vessel had good care and maintenance, enjoying several refits including refitting and upgrades in 2008 in California.  However following his purchase of the yacht in Sydney, Australia in 2013 the current owner placed SPIRIT though a most comprehensive refit and upgrade program during 2014 at Yachting Developments Ltd in New Zealand.

The key concepts of the refit were to modernize the vessel and provide contemporary living space, to renew equipment and improve reliability and sail handling, all whilst retaining her true heritage.

The work included:-

·       Full repaint of coachroof in white and hull topsides in “silver” (Anniversary Silver by Alexseal M9389).

·       Removal of the aft deck / cockpit area and the addition of a new cockpit seating arrangement under a semi-fixed Bimini and the addition of new pedestals and twin wheels (in place of the original single wheel).

·       The addition of a new guest cabin in the forward area (previously a fo’c’sle with crew berth and sail stowage.)

·       Re-modelling of the pilothouse (removing the old internal helm).

·       Addition of a “scullery” area forward of the saloon on port side.

·       All interior spaces were refitted, modernized and have new soft furnishings.

·       All bathrooms have new fittings.

·       New entertainment systems throughout.

·       The yacht was completely rewired.

·       Two new generators (replacing a single one previously).

·       New water-maker.

·       New s/s rod rigging. New running rigging.

·       New sails.

Skilful use of composite enabled an overall weight reduction of five tonnes, resulting in extra boat speed and manoeuvrability when underway.

SPIRIT is now able to accommodate up to 9 guests in four comfortable staterooms.

She can be run with a captain and one crew member.

She offers an open layout plan and alfresco living in her cockpit area.

SPIRIT is a sleek and contemporary yacht, ideal for families.

June 2015 the vessel has had her annual yard service with fresh antifouling.

HULL and DECK

She has a round bilge form with fin keel and independently hung balanced spade rudder.

The yacht is constructed of foam-cored sandwich fibreglass reinforced plastic.

The hull was built over a male mould using a polyester resin and S-glass lay-up.

The foam core is Divinycell. Kevlar reinforcements are also used at key locations in the structure.

The deck moulding is also a sandwich structure (based on the Swan 86 tooling).

A one piece moulding forms the deck areas, coachroof and cockpits and the deckhouse is of aluminium alloy with a fibreglass sandwich top.

Lead external ballast keel, secured to a deep stub keel with the structure stiffened in this area by substantial fabricated floor members.

The mast step is a similar structure and incorporates a hydraulic mast jack for rig tensioning.

COCKPIT

The cockpit arrangement has been completely re-configured (to incorporate a large al fresco dining area with large bimini cover, capable of seating 8 comfortably for dinner), as well as twin wheel helm stations with carbon wheels and contemporary and highly functional controls.

From deck there is direct access through an electrical/hydraulic operated sliding door to the pilothouse.

At the stern is a hydraulic operated fold down boarding/ bathing ladder with a hot and cold shower.

The aft lazarette holds numerous spares, tools and equipment.

At the bow is access to the sail locker.

Custom made roller fairleads at bow, stern and amidships makes line handling a breeze.

REMARKS / HISTORY

Built as a world cruising yacht “Flawless” as she was first named, was launched in Finland September 1991. She sailed to the Canaries and then the Caribbean that winter. Early in 1992 she was exhibited at the Miami Boat Show and later that summer returned to Europe (being based for some time in Palma de Mallorca).  Late in 1993 she came for sale and changed hands in 1994.

When the yacht sold her new owner promptly took her to an American yard to prepare for a trip around the world, which he accomplished.  In preparation for another voyage, in 2000 he put DIE SWAENE into a European yard for a substantial refit.

The yacht was shipped to New Zealand and later sailed up to California.

DIE SWAENE was bought by former owners in California in 2007 and they invested further in upgrades and maintenance in preparation for long distance sailing.

The yacht had a general refit in California, Marina del Rey during 2008.

During 2008 and 2009 the yacht cruised the Pacific Ocean.

October 2009 she sailed to New Zealand.

In Auckland she had some general refurbishing.

The yacht sailed to Australia later that year and was based near Sydney.

In 2013 the yacht was sold to her current owner.

The yacht was renamed SPIRIT and has been completely refitted and modernised.

Since the refit, SPIRIT was sailed on the northeast coast of Australia and cruising the Whitsunday Islands.  The yacht raced at the Audi Hamilton Island Race week, finishing sixth in class in light airs, and second on the final race.  Since then the owners have moved the boat to Singapore and cruised both the South China Sea and Andaman Sea.
